The 1888 Society

In 1888, a group of Atlanta women in a sewing circle were delivering clothes one day and discovered a child tied to a bedpost as a safety measure while her mother, like many mothers then, worked long hours in the cotton mills. Determined to help these families, the women began to offer childcare for the children and Sheltering Arms was born.

Named for that pivotal year, The 1888 Society serves to positively impact Atlanta’s children and their families for years to come while offering the opportunity for members to work together and serve as leaders in philanthropy.

Funding provided by The 1888 Society provides:

  • Needs-based tuition scholarships for young children at Sheltering Arms
  • The highest quality teacher training available through Sheltering Arms’ Georgia Training Institute
  • Comprehensive family support services
  • Year-round literacy programming for our children

The 1888 Society is exclusive to individuals giving $1,000 or more annually to Sheltering Arms.
