We are living in unprecedented times. While the world is experiencing a global pandemic, it is also watching the senseless displays of racial violence and injustice. Just in the past couple of months, we have witnessed the deaths of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and now George Floyd. It is overwhelming and traumatic.
Our communities are grieving. People are angry, sad, frustrated and exhausted. Some have participated in peaceful protests; others have taken part in riots.
As an early childhood education provider and leader, Sheltering Arms plays a critical role in providing children with tools that set them up for a bright future – one that offers inclusion and opportunity, and where their lives are valued.
We will continue leading discussions that bring awareness to, and speak out against, racial disparities and inequities regarding the youngest among us. We will continue to work with community partners and advocacy groups to impact local, state and national policies and priorities.
We encourage you to join us in taking action. Get involved in your community to stand against injustice. Volunteer with grassroots organizations that promote equality and respect diversity. Complete the 2020 Census and be counted so the funds for childcare, schools, healthcare and affordable housing can flow into the communities that need it most. Let your voice be heard and vote. Local elections are equally as important.
For those who do not share the same experience as those in the black community, we urge you to show empathy and compassion. Be an ally – stand up and speak out against injustice.
Now, more than ever, is the time for us to work together to create the change we need in our communities and in our country.
