What is Operation StoryBook? Chances are, the values you hold most dear are those you learned through stories...stories shared by family, stories heard in worship, stories read in books. On September 17, share your stories with a child. Be a VIP Volunteer for Sheltering Arms' Operation StoryBook.
Operation StoryBook is Sheltering Arms' year-round literacy initiative that kicks-off with a metro-wide Read-A-Thon at all 17 Sheltering Arms centers on September 17. Volunteers can sign up for shifts to read to Sheltering Arms children; present Show and Tell to a Sheltering Arms class on your hobby, travels, or career; or share your favorite story through arts, crafts, music, drama, or play.
Through Operation StoryBook, 2500 children will receive a new book every month for their home library. Classroom and enrichment activities and family literacy events will help children develop the skills and interest to become lifelong readers.
Research shows that nearly two-thirds of low income families have no books in the home, one of the strongest predictors of future reading ability. Sheltering Arms' Operation StoryBook closes that gap by getting books in the hands of children during the early years when 90% of brain development occurs. Money raised from Operation StoryBook sponsorships provides children with books and the early childhood education that helps them get ready to read.
